Former NFL Quarterback Don McPherson Discusses “Aspirational Masculinity” with Newark Academy Students

Former NFL and CFL quarterback Don McPherson, a national advocate for the prevention of sexual and domestic violence, spoke to Newark Academy students about aspirational masculinity on February 6, 2024 as part of the school’s Signature Speaker Series.

“This is a generation of boys in which the only form of masculinity we’ve been talking to them about is toxic masculinity,” he said. Instead, McPherson coined the term “aspirational masculinity” to talk to boys about being authentic, whole and evolving.

Following the presentation, students were able to ask questions and continue the discussion through a breakout session with McPherson. He also conducted an additional training session for faculty and staff.

McPherson is the author of “You Throw Like a Girl: The Blind Spot of Masculinity” which chronicles 36 years of harnessing the power and appeal of sport to address complex social issues and focuses on gender-based violence prevention and the promotion of aspirational masculinity. McPherson is a national leader and advocate for the prevention of sexual and domestic violence. He has conducted workshops and lectures for more than 375 college campuses, community organizations and national sports and violence prevention organizations.

Newark Academy’s Signature Speaker Series brings distinguished individuals from around the world to address the NA community, enriching students’ understanding and broadening their intellectual horizons.
