Chairman William D. Green announced the appointment: "It is with great pleasure that I advise you that the Board of Trustees, acting on the unanimous recommendation of the search committee, has elected Donald M. Austin as our Head of School, effective July 1, 2007. Mr. Austin, who currently serves as Resident Director of the School Year Abroad of Rennes, France, is an outstanding match for Newark Academy.
During the past six months, Newark Academy conducted an extensive nationwide search. In this search, we sought a role model and leader who projects high integrity, is a keen listener, and a proven consensus-builder. We wanted our new head to possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to the diverse constituencies of Newark Academy, most significantly, our outstanding student body. Strong academic credentials and exceptional communications skills were imperative and in our search, we focused on the managerial skill set we believe is essential to succeed at our school, the ability to motivate, instill teamwork, and develop talented professionals. We also sought a person with vision, flexibility, a sense of humor and an affinity for change."
"Don Austin embodies these characteristics. He earned an undergraduate degree in English and French from Georgetown University, a master’s degree in French Language and Civilization from New York University, and a master’s of philosophy in French Studies, also from New York University. Prior to his seven-year tenure at the School Year Abroad, Don served at the Collegiate School for 15 years. Don is a strong and accomplished administrator who sets clear goals and strives to bring out the best in the professionals with whom he works. He is a wonderful communicator, a strategic thinker and a superb teacher, with a global focus that matches our mission."
